25 Best Alex Turner Songs

1. A Certain Romance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUdf6S7b9cM Artist: Arctic Monkeys Album: 'Whatever People I Am, That's What I'm Not' Year: 2006 Best lyric: "Well over there, there's broken bones / There's only music, so that there's new ringtones / And it don't take no Sherlock Holmes / To see it's a little different, around here." It had to be, didn't it? 'A Certain Romance' is the Arctic Monkeys song. They really step it up for the album closers, and their first is still the defining image we have of the band. And it's no surprise it was the song in 'Live at the Apollo' that interspersed with clips of them. As Alex beckons us down to the seafront, spinning on the spot in sheer bliss to the song's touching tinkles, it really does feel like the end credits for any film about the band. It's a maddened intro, followed by a evaporation of Alex's despair; it's a tale of friends, frenemies, and of the lads that hang around the estate, and it's about how the people under the Sheffield sun, how those characters of 'Whatever People Say...' aren't so far removed from Alex and his friends, about how he can forgive his friends anything. Because whether they grow their hair, date models or up sticks and move out the suburbs, 'A Certain Romance' will always be a glue holding them together. It's the song in which you feel like the Arctic Monkeys are a family: a witty, furiously talented band of brothers that it must be so much fun to be a part of. But what are your favourite Alex Turner songs? What do you think of the new record? Let me know in the comments!
