24. Fool's Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8ixnqRyfzU 'Fool's Day' was a Record Store Day single 2010, and what was brilliant about it, was that it was an understated return. No fanfare. No big release. Just a free download and no big expectation tag, for Blur's first single in seven years. But if they had have booked the fireworks, the song would've been no let-down. 'Fool's Day' is bottled nostalgia, from Graham's playful riff to Dave's 'Song 2'-a-like drums, but as with most of Blur's more Britpoppy stuff, it's the melody that anchors it. It's chirpy, longing and the harmonies simply accentuate the bucolic atmosphere; talk of Damon on his bike and dreams of last night flicker in and out of the scene, but it's a studio "and a love of all sweet music" that sees Damon bind the track, the band, and actually, us, the listening fans together. "We just can't let go", indeed.
