5. Pyramid Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbKQPqs-cqc Artist: Radiohead Album: 'Amnesiac' Year: 2001 Thom Yorke himself believes that 'Pyramid Song' is the best song that the band have ever written. It's brilliant just for the meaning behind the name (the rhythm is formed from four beats of three and a beat of four, when translated into regular polygons, form a pyramid). The song is the absolute standout from 'Amnesiac' though, because it feels like it belongs in another world completely: perhaps the astral canal referenced in the song, where everyone who ever loved Thom comes to his aid. It's a song of black-eyed angels and nothing to fear, an intimidating chord shift and enchanting melody; it really is liminal ground in which Yorke feels elated. 'Pyramid Song' is a track of stark disparities within the song's own nature, but as is natural with Radiohead, it feels like an expression so pure, there's no line between Yorke's thoughts and our own. That's what makes the man so great, the band so magical and 'Pyramid Song' so glistening. It's a timeless composition.
