5 Bands That Could've Been Even Bigger Than They Were

In the 90s and 2000s, you couldn't turn on MTV without seeing Fred Durst on the channel. The man was everywhere, even becoming a playable character in a WWE video game. He was one of the most popular (or infamous depending on your point of view) men in the world at the time, and he so badly wanted to be the spokesman for his generation. He even has a song about it, it's called "My Generation." He frequently refers to "us" in songs, and tries to make a statement with his music. For every song about the nookie, he has a song where he's pointing out some of the struggle he's been through in life or something he saw wrong in the world today. The band's most popular effort to date, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, was the fastest rock album to get to one million sold, only taking a week to do so. I was a young kid when Durst and Co. were hitting the scene, but I can remember him being everywhere on the television and hearing their music constantly on the radio. Durst is a person that idolized Kurt Cobain, covering their songs at shows all the time, and even having a tattoo of the Nirvana frontman on his arm. Although this band was on top of the world for a certain amount of time, I think they could've stayed on top for a lot longer than they were and cemented their place on top as legends. Ironically, it wasn't Dursts departure that signalled the end of this band's reign, but guitarist Wes Borland that started their fall. It might be attributed to Fred Durst since him and Borland had some kind of falling out, but either way without the guitarist and his different style of play, combining different effects and elements of heavy metal and what one might even call space rock, Limp Bizkit couldn't succeed. After a few more lineup change, Limp Bizkit wasn't the same until they reunited in 2009 with the original lineup and released Gold Cobra, a return to their old style of music and a step in the right direction if they ever want to go back to their spot at the top.
