5 Bands Who Drastically Changed Their Sound
1. Anathema
Anathema is one of the most extreme case studies in genre evolution. The band started off mixing two established genres, Doom Metal and Death Metal, which paved the way for other bands in the now aptly named Death/Doom Metal genre. Considering they were one of the only bands at the time to even attempt this, they are often credited as one of the three founding bands of the genre.
Their 1993 debut Serenades showcased this style by featuring heavy Doom Metal riffs paired with Death Metal growls. The band made changes to their sound through the late 90s, ultimately landing in an entirely different genre by the turn of the century.
Anathema's sound shifted from Death/Doom Metal to Atmospheric Progressive Rock in the span of less than a decade. Their debut album had only a single song with anything resembling 'singing', so to have a man and woman singing in harmony, backed by an orchestra on nearly every track, is a whole different ballpark.
