5 Best Songs For Open Mic Nights

2. Recovery - Frank Turner

Of all the songwriters to come out of the 2000's, Frank Turner's style always seemed to be the most sincere. While his songs always had a folk rock foundation, Frank's background in heavier genres like punk and hardcore gave the songs an added jolt. Out of all the tunes in the man's catalog, "Recovery" stands as the most earnest look at the average man on the street.

The narrator of the song is extremely blunt about the mistakes he's made, from waking up in strange flats to turning to serotonin boosters to help him get through the day. Pretty morbid stuff all things considered. However, Frank's optimism shines through as he asserts that it may be a long way up to recovery, but he is determined to take that step towards happiness with the help of his significant other.

This song is perfect for anyone who has ever dealt with hardships in their lives (which is exactly EVERYONE.) The tone also feels like a drinking song, which is perfect for the open mic variety of performers. If this one goes over well, there is also a tremendous back catalog of Turner's work that is poignant and optimistic in equal measure.
