5 Current Rappers To Watch (And 5 To Forget)

4. It's Time To Forget: Wiz Khalifa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UePtoxDhJSw Wiz Khalifa is a feature rapper, and a feeble one at that. They're a dime a dozen these days - decrepit also-rans like Big Sean and 2 Chainz who dribble their bovine pop-rap onto any tracks that will have them, whoring themselves wilfully for just a drop of hype and crowd pull. They rely on features because they lack the presence, personality and technical ability to stand on their own. Wiz is the embodiment of this artless approach to seducing fame by any means necessary - mindless drone rap, verse upon featured verse of unremarkable wordplay. Bleating "black and yellow" over and over again in a monotone groan is not a rap song. It's a farce, and it's a shocking indictment of the state of the music industry to see that this comatose rap donkey still has a career. Wiz Khalifa's apathetic rhymes demonstrate his struggle - he can't be the I-do-what-I-want irreverent stoner rapper who lives by his own rules and the rap pop chart darling that his wallet (and corporate minders) tells him to be. As an uneasy compromise, and we get tired of disengaged rap shovelled into the miserable grave of chart-bait production. Worst of all, we'll surely hear a lot more from ol' Wiz. He's too stoned to realise that he's become entirely redundant.

Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
