5 Essential Alice In Chains Songs

At the pretty end of the Alice in Chains spectrum you get the likes of this. 'Voices' appears after the three heavy as lead tracks that begin this years awesome, 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here', which is the band's second record with new vocalist, William DuVall. The album as a whole is an absolute triumph, and a real kick in the teeth for those that refuse to listen to the band. without Staley. 'TDPDH', does the almost impossible trick of sounding typically Alice, whilst breaking new ground and being unbelievably high in quality from top to bottom. 'Voices' sits at the one tempo and follows the template of stripped back verse into a lush, layered and gigantic chorus. The verses are a lovely example of how Cantrell has managed to make his and DuVall's voices work as well as it did with Staley's. It doesn't hurt that DuVall's voice isn't too far, in tone, from Staley's, but still possesses it's own identity. When that chorus comes in though, be prepared to be stopped in your tracks, no matter what you are doing at the time. A more satisfying mixture of vocals and guitars you'll be hard pushed to find. There is definitely a lot of Cantrell's love of country music shining through here as well. Brilliant song and, word is, the next single.
