5 "Joke" Bands That Have Way More Talent Than You Think
5. Tenacious D
When your lyrics include such subtle gems as "I love ya baby, but all I can think about is kielbasa sausage, your butt cheeks is warm," asking people to take you seriously is a difficult sell. But Jack Black and Kyle Gass deserve major props for their music mastery, because they're a couple of genuinely talented dudes. (Though maybe "Kielbasa" isn't the height of their subtlety.) Their self-titled debut is a smattering of various genres of rock, with homages to everyone from Judas Priest to the Eagles. And they sink into every sound, getting deep into the nooks and crannies of whatever style they're emulating. Kyle Gass was not the youngest graduate from Juliard's classical guitar program, as he once claimed (jokingly), but there's no denying that the guy has some serious chops on the axe. Just listen to that sweet guitar action interspersed throughout their ode to life on the road, aptly titled "The Road." That's not the sound of someone who decided to give this whole "guitar thing" a try because they couldn't find a session musician who would work for pizza. That's the sound of technical prowess.
