Rick Nielsen is the lead guitarist and chief songwriter for the classic rockers Cheap Trick; he's a veritable force of nature when it comes to his playing and live performances and happens to be one of the most underrated musicians still in the rock scene. Part of Nielsen's charm - besides his ability to write an uncanny hook and a killer rock song - is that he has one of the strangest collections of custom guitars any musician could ever possibly hope to own; chief amongst that being this absolutely crazy five string. Nielsen has a close relationship with Hamer guitars and boasts a huge collection of custom designed instruments from them. The idea for the five-necked guitar came from a party piece he had live where he would pile five different guitars around his neck and progressively play - before discarding each one - throughout a single solo. The logistics around it became too much, having to carry five different instruments, all connected to different amps and then have a stage hand close by to catch them as he moved to the next one, so he commissioned Hamer to make one guitar that was up to the job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4YcVMNhVCQ Hamer's solution was a simple one, they simply dovetailed five of their Standard guitars together, making the bodywork look effortless and then ran a mass of wires through the middle to the output jack - simple in concept but more than likely fairly complicated in the actual execution. Either way, the crackers instrument has gone down in history as one of the most insanely indulgent guitars ever made and the perfect instrument to compliment Nielsen's eccentric persona.
