Rock music of the 90s can quite easily be viewed as a heavy comedown from the hedonistic 80s, a time in which the party ended and grunge ruled the roost with its self-loathing, introverted ways. Britpop brought a dose of optimism back to the UK's shores, but collapsed in on itself after growing far bigger than any anticipated. Thankfully The Libertines were on hand to reintroduce romanticism to rock and roll, yelping and slurring their way through references to a reimagined England (archaically named Albion) and the far-off utopia of Arcadia. Alternating between bittersweet calls-to-arms and bus-shelter love ballads, Pete and Carl remind the country of the wit and nostalgia it had almost forgotten in the modern age.
