50 Worst Number Ones Of All Time

35. The Black Eyed Peas: Boom Boom Pow (2009)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m48GqaOz90 This song kick started a monster era for The Black Eyed Peas... it€™s just a shame it€™s not very good. It€™s not as reliant on auto tune as later Black Eyed Peas hits, but it€™s still hovering around like a bad cough. The production is also very repetitive and lazy, only really picking up half way into the song. The song is undoubtedly at its height when it doesn€™t try to act as some weird rap / dance hybrid; when the auto tune heavy verses take a back seat. Fergie introduces the final half of the song, with what is easily the best vocal performance of the song, possibly because it€™s the only part that feels authentic.

34. Maroon 5: Payphone (2012)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRaWnd3LJfs Maroon 5 were coming of the huge €˜Moves Like Jagger€™, which to be honest I never really saw the fuss about. But it was a good song. But €˜Payphone€™ didn€™t deserve to do well. It€™s very bubblegum, and very awful. The addition of Wiz Khalifa is incredibly redundant, being that he€™s also removed from pretty much every radio edit of the song. What started off as a rock band of sorts has almost definitely transcended head first into pop. The production leaves a lot to be desired, and for some absurd reason Levine€™s vocal sounds awfully distorted in places, which again is rather unnecessary.

33. Vanilla Ice: Ice Ice Baby (1990)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rog8ou-ZepE Another song that topped the charts courtesy of a gimmick. There isn€™t really much of a chorus, other than a quiet repetition of the song€™s title. And regardless of how many times Mr. Ice implores us the €˜check out the hook€™ whilst his DJ revolves it, we€™re still left with a distinct feeling of emptiness. I don€™t understand why this experienced the high levels of success that it did, but it€™s quite a fun song. Fun, but not great. I suppose it does serve its purpose, being that it encourages people to get up on dance. After all, it€™s never absent from a high school prom.

32. Dizzee Rascal: Dirtee Disco (2010)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yPfU_92t7g Dizzee Rascal was in the middle of a complete image rebrand, moving from the grime scene into a hybrid of dance and rap. This gem unfortunately, is a moment to forget. The production is reminiscent of a cheap and tacky version of Saturday Night Fever, with Rascal€™s efforts to appear family friendly evidently taking over. There€™s nothing dirtee about this disco, apart from its horrendous production and lacklustre chorus. As if that wasn€™t bad enough, it has also been reported that €˜Dirtee Disco€™ was the lowest selling number one of the year, which in all honesty, is not a surprise in the slightest.

31. Gareth Gates: Spirit In The Sky (2003)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDgs7ERjC7A Oh Gareth, why. It€™s not the greatest song of all time, but his vocal performance is pretty weak. He lacks emotion, and the key change is remarkably terrible, being that he sounds even more monotone than before, if that€™s even possible. It reached number one for a whole bunch of reasons: being Gareth Gates, having The Kumars onboard and being a Comic Relief single, but it€™s also quite a lacklustre effort on Gates€™ behalf. The video asks if Will Young is still available, and whilst he probably wouldn€™t have fit the song€™s jovial production, you€™d have to think he€™d at least give it a bit more welly than poor ole€™ Gareth.
