7 Highlights From Musicfest Northwest 2012

2. Moon Duo

An unexpected discovery, Moon Duo locked into a sprawling, psyche rock groove that recalled a more melodic Spacemen 3 or Suicide, post-punk heavies both. Mixing motorcycle metaphors with a strobing, hypnotic light show projected against the stage, the San Francisco-based act distinguished themselves as a group to watch in the future.

3. Pains of Being Pure At Heart

"Playing music in Portland is about as good as it gets," enthused Kip Berman, lead singer and guitarist for Brooklyn's Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. A former resident of the Rose City, Berman led his band through a sweaty 45-minute set that balanced older material from the group's first two albums with newer, currently unrecorded tracks ("Explode"). Pains encored with, "Sister," which showcased the band's lush, alt. rock guitar textures and cooing vocals. Watch: http://youtu.be/mEN65ocA31Y
