6. Dinosaur Jr
The loudest band in the world,
Dinosaur Jr.capped Saturday night with a triumphant, ear-busting performance that drew upon nearly all eras of the trio's recorded output. The group's principals - J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph have a notorious, on-again, off-again history complete with tender compliments and bitter recriminations alike, but they were all smiles on this night. Of particular note was their plodding rendition of "Back To Your Heart", arguably Barlow's greatest songwriting contribution to date. Pictured below: amps from the band's tenure piled high at a retrospective
pop-up shop sponsored by Red Bull.
7. The Hives
The Hives have never lacked for style. Garbed in top hats and matching tuxedos, they took to the stage at the
Doug Fir Lounge (think Clockwork Orange's sleek Milk Bar filtered through a log and lumberjack motif) and rattled off a dozen tracks in 30 minutes, including their 2001 anthem "Hate To Say I Told You So". Pelle Almqvist, the band's lead singer and resident rabble rouser, worked the crowd between tracks with observational humor, including this gem which riffed on the event's acronym: "MOTHER F*** NORTH WEST" Well played sir, well played. Oh, and the band had
ninjas for guitar techs. NINJAS!
