7 Songs That Foreshadowed Awful Events
4. T. Rex - Jeepster
Despite the fact there are dozens of people who can claim to have had a landscape shifting impact on rock music, few can match the legacy of the iconic Marc Bolan. In a primordial era of rock music highlighted by jacket and jeans wearing groups like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, T. Rex completely changed the narrative with their outlandish appearance. T. Rex suddenly took the plain look of rock and turned it on its head, introducing the world to what is now considered glam rock. T. Rex were far more than a look and a gimmick mind, as they were also an outstanding, game changing band.
The band’s vocalist, Marc Bolan, had an extreme fear of dying in a car crash and never learned to drive as a result, which is why the song ‘Jeepster’ was such a strange inclusion into the band’s discography. ‘Jeepster’ is a song about Bolan comparing a beautiful woman to a car with lines such as ‘Yes you're my love Oh, girl I'm just a Jeepster for your love’ and ‘I'll call you Jaguar If I may be so bold’. In hindsight, lines such as ‘You slide so good with bones so fair’ now hold eerie connotations considering Bolan’s fate.
But, the shockingly bizarre nature of Bolan’s death is highlighted further by the lyrics of his solo song, ‘Solid Gold Easy Action’, which includes the line ‘easy as picking foxes from a tree’. In 1977, Marc Bolan died in a car crash after hitting a tree, and the car’s registration plate read ‘FOX 661L’.
