8 Fictional Characters Inspired By David Bowie

2. Lucifer - The Sandman

Lucifer, the fallen angel and lord of Hell made quite an impression in The Sandman. Lucifer started out as more of an observer in early appearances but later on decided to quit his position as ruler of Hell and leave the choice of its new leadership up to Dream, The Sandman€™s main character. Why? Because he thought it would be funny to make Dream€™s life that difficult. He is Lucifer after all. Once he leaves hell he gets a spinoff series (where he looks disappointingly less like David Bowie) where he runs a piano bar and eventually becomes god of his own new universe.

With The Sandman's depiction of the fallen angel, Neil Gaiman was weirdly adamant about having his Lucifer resemble Bowie. Gaiman is quoted as telling his artist, Kelley Jones, €œYou must draw David Bowie. Find David Bowie, or I€™ll send you David Bowie. Because if it isn€™t David Bowie, you€™re going to have to redo it until it is David Bowie.€ Neil wanted someone who looked like an angel, and Bowie€™s early folky days with his curly hair and androgynous beauty fit the bill. So just as you might have suspected since his performance in Labyrinth, David Bowie is indeed the lord of Hell.
