8 Massive Song Cliches Everyone Is Tired Of Hearing
4. Songs About The Abstract Idea Of Being Able To “Do Anything”
The title of this entry might be slightly laboured, but you'll understand what I mean in a second. Inspirational music has always existed, sure, but it seems that recently the idea is being pushed to a whole other level of nonsensicalness.
Pop star Katy Perry is guilty on multiple counts. Her song Roar, for example, is founded on the repeated promise that she's a champion you'll "hear roar". She has the eye of a tiger, she dances through fire, you know the drill. It's basically the same as what's happening in Firework, except in that song she's shooting across the sky because her possibilities are so limitless.
That's really what this cliché is about – telling people they're amazing through some nonsense metaphor. Alicia Key's Girl On Fire proudly proclaims that “this girl is on fire” and “she's walking on fire”, which sounds pretty dangerous if you ask me. Inspiration is fine, but can it start making sense?
