What came to be known as Nipplegate is an infamous event in the history of American television because of the effect it had on the countrys indecency regulations. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performed together at the 2004 Superbowl halftime show and, towards the end of a performance of Rock Your Body, Timberlake ripped off part of Jacksons dress, exposing her breast. Though her nipple was concealed by a nipple shield. The Federal Communications Commission fined broadcaster CBS (who claimed that it was planned independently by Jackson and Timberlake) $550,000 and indecency regulations were tightened as a result with fines for indecency violations skyrocketing by over 1000%. All because two people underestimated the American peoples propensity to overreact. Ironically, it was Jacksons career that suffered the most from this incident while Timberlakes continued steadily despite him being the bigger idiot for actually going through with ripping the dress. But regardless of who did what, on that day they both acted like complete tools and nobody is likely to forget it anytime soon.
