8 Songs Millennials Don’t Know Are Remakes
3. Ray Of Light - Madonna
Madonna’s groundbreaking techno hit was released as the second single on the Ray Of Light Album. In 1998, it entered the Hot 100 chart at number five, making it her highest chart debut ever. But what made Madonna choose to re-make this song, which is based on the track Sepheryn, written by Curtiss Muldoon and Dave Curtis?
The singer explained that the 1996 birth of her daughter, Lourdes, prompted her to "search for answers to questions I'd never asked myself before," leading her to the teachings of Kabbalah.
When Madonna recorded Ray Of Light with producer William Orbit, they decided to change the melody, but kept most of the lyrics because they reflected Madonna's interest in spirituality and faith.
Co-writer Curtiss Muldoon had no clue about the remake until a friend heard it on the radio. "I was a bit annoyed at first because Madonna wanted 30 percent just for changing a couple of lines, but then I realized that 15 percent of millions is a lot better than 100 percent of nothing.”
