Most of the musicians discussed in this list so far died because of life habits catching up with them (so much heart disease!) or because of an accident (electrocution, pyro mistake). But this spot is reserved one of the most senseless murders to ever occur within the confines of the music world, and certainly the most horrifying thing to witness at a live show.

Darrell Abbott, affectionately known as "Dimebag" to fans of groove metal band Pantera, had parted ways with his band after some tension with lead singer Phil Anselmo. A year later, he formed a new band, Damageplan with his brother, Vinnie.

Performing with his new band in Columbus, Ohio, Abbott was shot and killed by an ex-Marine and ex "fan" of Pantera, who was allegedly upset that they'd disbanded and blamed Dimebag for causing the split. The man was able to get onto the stage because others assumed he was going to stage dive, instead he pulled out a gun and shot the guitarist, who was head banging and unaware of the man approaching him.
