Released in 1993, "Today" remains one The Smashing Pumpkins most popular songs. And as with many of the songs on this list, the music is upbeat, with singer Billy Corgan's delivery coming across as hypnotic and sweet, with the repeated, catchy mantra:

Today is the greatest Day I've ever known Can't wait for tomorrow
It would be entirely possible to find yourself happily singing along. Placed within the context of the rest of the song, however, things get a whole lot darker. Why is today so great? Because today the singer has decided to let go of life and commit suicide tomorrow.
Tomorrow's much too long I'll burn my eyes out Before I get out
With a chorus supposedly so upbeat, it's very easy to ignore the lyrics of the verses and merely nod along to the tune, but the morbid subject matter is very much present throughout the rest of the song:
Pink ribbon scars That never forget I tried so hard To cleanse these regrets My angel wings
Corgan has since detailed how the song was extremely autobiographic €“ at the time of writing the singer had become overweight and depressed to the point of being suicidal.
