9. "MMMBop" Is About Mortality Anxiety

If you don't remember the time this song was king, you're probably very young. Released by 90s band Hanson and known for its sugary sound (so much so it could probably lead to diabetes), MMMbop was actually nominated for two Grammy Awards and charted at number one in over twenty-five countries around the world. What a time to be alive.

But the song is literally about trying to forge as many meaningful connections as possible so you won't die alone. Not only that, but the lyrics recognise the fact that it's all pretty futile regardless, as the majority of these relationships will die before you do:
You have so many relationships in this life Only one or two will last You go through all the pain and strife Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
For a song that features the chorus "Mmmbop, da badu dop / Du bee bap ba dubap" this is fairly existential stuff.
