9 Times Manic Street Preachers Proved They Were The Most Exciting Band On The Planet

8. They Were Never Short Of A Controversial Quote

Before Noel Gallagher became to go-to guy for a nice, controversial quote, there was Manic Street Preachers. Their early interviews are legendary, full of grandiose statements and vicious bile, mostly aimed at other bands. One of their most famous and contentious quotes came in 1991, when Richey Edwards told NME: €œI will always hate Slowdive more than Hitler.€

Clearly, slagging off one of the time€™s most popular shoegaze bands was never going to go down well, but comparing them to the Nazi leader was some next-level goading. Because the Manics were never short of a snappy or controversial sound bite, this was far from an isolated incident. Richey also said that "Smash hits was €œmore effective in polluting minds than Goebbels ever was", that the Pet Shop Boys made €œthe worst kind of English pop€, and that you could go to any Levellers concert and €œshout €˜Jeremy€™ and 75% of the audience would turn around€.

Meanwhile Nicky Wire simply called The Smiths and New Order side-project Electronic €œfat, bloated, hideous bastards who deserve shooting€.
