AFI - Burials Album Review: All 13 Tracks Analyzed

10. Wild €“ The band delivers a breathless, midnight sprint on the appropriately titled "Wild." The song features some of the most experimental flourishes found on the album, such as the electronic manipulation of Havok's voice following each chorus. The most satisfying experimental moment of the album comes at the bridge section, when the drums take a surprise turn into a Bossa Nova rhythm. It's a moment of songwriting brilliance that is strengthened upon a second listen, which reveals the primary drum rhythm of the song to be a couple of swung notes away from being identical to the Bossa Nova. "Wild" is an electrifying, creative delight and an album highlight. 11. Greater Than 84 €“ AFI show off their basic math skills on the strong, late album track, "Greater Than 84." A song that could have easily descended into gimmick territory with the multiple mentions of the year 1985, instead delivers some satisfyingly heavy, crunching guitar riffs and another high energy, expertly conceived song. The band employs numerous tempo shifts and the drum performance of Adam Carson shines once again, with inventive fills and interesting hi-hat riffs. 12. Anxious €“ With "Anxious," AFI are twelve songs into their new album and are still delivering good songs and fresh variations of their current sound. Davey Havok dominates the song with a strong vocal melody and emotionally naked lyrics. He sings, "Oh / I am anxious and aching / breathing the burning air / caring for something that is not there / knowing what's fated / begin my fatal flight / flying obscenely into the light," laying bare his fears and thoughts of death's omnipresent loom. The song is hurt by a chorus that bears a resemblance to others heard earlier on the album, but AFI still manages to firmly hold the listener's attention forty five minutes into the album.
