Despite AB III having the lead single that would truly put Alter Bridge on the map, the album's conceptual, narrative nature made it a far more complex listen.

One of the most interesting songs is 'Words Darker Than Their Wings', a contrasting track about religious belief where Myles and Mark alternate the roles of atheist and believer, discussing the notion of the afterlife and God.

The song's name comes from a line in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (TV's Game of Thrones), long since a favourite of Mark Tremonti's, where the full passage deals with a character being told from afar of their eventual demise by way of raven's message.

Comparing these "words darker than their wings" in the book with the messaging of the song is pure poetry, as after offering multiple opinions on the subject both Myles and Mark sing together, saying to the other - and the listener - "May you find truth alone" in the end.
