The very name 'Alter Bridge' usually draws some stares from newcomers or people you describe the band to. It's definitely a strange one, but little do many know that Detroit's 'Alter Road' is a real place, and one that was very close to Mark Tremonti's home. He's mentioned in many interviews that growing up next to a road that lead off away from his home and towards the big city resonated in a big way. And so after Creed slowly fell apart and a potentially risky new direction was in order, making that connection between a new venture and the unknown on the other side has far more meaning than you may have realised.
