Arctic Monkeys: 10 Hidden Song Meanings

7. Alex Turner Finally Gets Political

It's rare for Arctic Monkeys to get too political, but the election of Donald Trump has been a hard topic for musicians to avoid. Turner breaks his political silence in their most recent album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. The song in question is "Golden Trunks":

The leader of the free world reminds you of a wrestler wearing tight golden trunks.

It doesn't take a cryptographer to decipher who he's taking aim at there. Much like the album, "Golden Trunks" overall meaning is shrouded in a typical Alex Turner ambiguity but there is no doubt that he utilises the all-too-real caricature of Donald Trump as a backdrop.

Alex Turner generally leaves his personal opinions on world affairs out of his music. First and foremost a lyrical romanticist, not an anarchist. But he has spent much of the last decade in the U.S. so it was only a matter of time before he got inspired by the political setting - and with a few choice lines in "Golden Trunks" he gives us a rare peek at his thoughts on the matter.

In the daytime, bendable figures with a fresh new pack of lies. Summat else to publicise, I'm sure you've heard about enough.

Trump does like his Twitter account, doesn't he?
