Arctic Monkeys - Their 15 Best Lyrics
11: "She saw it, and she grabbed it, and it wasn't what it seemed. The kids all dream of making it, whatever that means" Song: "Teddy Picker" Album: "Favourite Worst Nightmare" This song details the desperation among the masses to achieve some sort of fame and admiration in their life and the disillusioning nature of achieving this as Alex Turner bit by bit tears their preconceived notions of stardom apart. The line chosen makes an poignant stance upon this as at first Turner details the story of one person who was "lucky" enough to achieve fame only to realise that it is in fact not how they imagined it and they regret ever leaving their normal life. The second part of the lyric illuminates Turner's idea that being famous nowadays means next to nothing as in a world obsessed with loud, obnoxious reality tv stars and the like, no one is exactly sure what the true meaning of being a celebrity is, and as such feels entitled to fame despite having no credible achievements or talents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A2XBoxtcUA 10. "He became laughter's assassin, shortly after he showed you what it was" Song: The Jeweller's Hands Album: Humbug The song taken from Arctic Monkey's third album, is about a girl who unhappy with her current relationship seeks happiness through having another affair with another man. Turner acts as the cautionary voice of her conscience throughout the song, at first warning her that no good can come of her desire before shifting his attention to explaining to the listener of the trouble caused by her indiscretion. This line in particular stands out as the "he" in question is the man she feels so in admiration of, the titular jeweller, and it is only after he leaves her that she realises the consequences of her actions as he takes all of the joy out of her life. It's through his use of powerful personification that Turner manages to create a strong image in the listener's mind, with the jeweller's abrupt departure from the girl's life being akin to the happiness that he introduced her to being murdered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rq0Ag15sAI
