7. Dance Little Liar

Much how closing tracks have a central place in Monkeys' mythos, the opening track of their live shows is also an integral piece of their lore. Most often, it's been the anthemic "Brianstorm" that's heralded the group's arrival on stage, a track selected for its buoyancy and unfailing ability to please long-term fans. But there was a period where the Monkeys retreated into themselves and appeared to disregard the aural pleasure of their followers, and it was one marked by the appearance of "Dance Little Liar" as set opener.

As slow-burning as they come, Humbug's eight entry is a bass-heavy tapestry onto which is woven some of Turner's most elliptical lyrics. It's really the summation of everything the band sought to do with their third album: challenge both musically and lyrically.

Forgoing tales of disappointing nights out on the lash in favour of evasive references and complicated symbolism, Turner was beginning to really showcase his lyrical depth. What was formerly obvious was now opaque. The band were growing up, and fast...
