Arctic Monkeys' Humbug - 10 Years On: Ranking The Tracks From Worst To Best

3. Crying Lightning

As Humbug's lead single, "Crying Lighting" was our very first glance into the arresting, intoxicating world of the band's third album, its hypnotic, vision-inducing sound a very real departure from the accomplished indie rock 'n' roll schtick that had come to define the group.

Leaning heavily on confectionery-based symbolism, its unveiling certainly left fans with much to chew over, with talk of aggravated ice cream men and alluring gobstoppers taking resounding lyrical prominence. It was also at this point that the band's new image was unleashed upon the world: hair grown long and angst built into innocence, both things contributing towards a moody, shoegazing shift into new territory.

At its heart, "Crying Lighting" is a scaled-down prog odyssey where oceans of cascading guitar explode into a world-beating riff that the likes of Tommy Iommi and Jimi Hendrix would have been proud to pen. The song's Richard Ayoade-directed video only adds to its already clear aura of cool. A truly different direction for a band that would become synonymous with change.
