Blur: 1 Hidden Gem On Every Album
2. Bonus Singles Gem: Fool’s Day
Only released via the band’s website and a limited pressing of one thousand copies on vinyl, you’d be forgiven for having missed this Record Store Day exclusive but it’s a real treat.
The songs lyrics sound like they were written on the way to the studio. Not in the sense that they feel lazy or tossed off but in a more literal sense. Damon sings about waking up, drinking a coffee and dropping his kid off at school before heading into the studio.
“A studio, and a love of all sweet music, we just can't let goLet go, let go, let go, let go”
Adter the band’s formerly acrimonious end its lovely to hear them sounding so harmonious together in the studio. As Damon meditates “on what we’ve all become”, it’s a reminder that those of us who grew up with the band are all a bit older and, hopefully wiser.
There’s no real chorus to speak of. Instead, the band lock into a mid tempo groove for the duration before signing off with some classic Coxonian guitar squiggles. It’s no masterpiece but it sounds like a band enjoying each other’s company.
At the time, Blur fans were happy just to get any original Blur music. Listening today, the track still holds up as an enjoyably effortless slice of indie pop.
