1. Born To Run

So much has been said, and so much praised lavished on, what is undoubtedly Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's magnum opus. It is the quintessential album about growing up and 'getting out'. Had those stories been told before? Yes, they had, but never had they been told better, and with more heart and honest than on Born to Run. Springsteen had a lot of pressure on him (a lot of which he put on himself) during the recording of the album. He had been given a bigger budget than he was used to in order to engineer a hit after the disappointment of Greetings and The Wild, The Innocent. It took fourteen months to record, six which were dedicated solely to mastering the title track. Footage from the documentary Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run shows a clearly exhausted Bruce and E Street Band working until the wee hours in order to get the sound just right. It was well worth the effort: the album proved to be Springsteen's breakthrough and even led to the rocker landing the cover of Time and Newsweek in the same week (a first for a musician). The album presents the perfect blend of Springsteen's powerful, energetic rock songs (such as Born to Run and Night) that cry for escape and his more epic, sadder tales of loss and longing (Backstreets and Jungleland, for instance). Forty years after Born to Run's release, Springsteen might have produced some of America's finest records, but he's never bettered the album that led to him being dubbed 'The Future of Rock and Roll'.
