Crushed Out - Want To Give Review

rating: 4

Formerly 'Boom Chick', the Brooklyn Duo Crushed out are ready with their upcoming release. A debut, full-length album called 'Want To Give' which will ultimately be their second release since 'Show Pony' in 2010. As the 8 track EP done so well (hence their second album), we expect this album to do even better than the previous. Although with the name-change, their goals and gameplan have just kept on going full steam. Forming in 2009 and being able to produce an album in the following year is extremely good by anyones standards. Upon reading previous reviews and my previous statement saying how well that album actually done, there must be some kind of wizardry along the pipeline for these musicians to perform so well. Apparently lead singer Frank Hoier's father was a musician in the first white band to sign to Motown records. Eureka. Growing up knowing the business and his second-hand nature to a recording studio and music creation evidentially reflected on his own prospects of being able to create great music. An unfair advantage? Even if your jealous levels are high at this moment in time, if you have these facilities at your personal disposal, theres no doubt that youre going to use them. Anyhoo, lets get onto the music at hand. Due to a technical error with my streaming service and the limited amount of released songs as of this point in time, we only have Weigh You Down to look at, which is fine! Weigh You Done is the single from Want To Give, so listening to this song should give us a decent example of the bands recent accomplishments, overall style and what to expect from the upcoming album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ccddneKiSc A very White Stripes style in the formation of utilising two musicians to create a band. A concept which could go horribly wrong as it takes excellent talent and collaboration from both to create enticing songs however like White Stripes, Crushed Out do it well. The very style they create with tones of the tremolo variety and catchy chords are very Beach Boys in the Beach/Surf Rock they emulate. I could go on to say many more great bands which Crushed Out remind me of but you get the picture. Weigh You Down is a great summertime record, simply from the way it makes you feel when you listen. A clean and quirky song and although only short (2.33 minutes), its all you need. The repetitiveness of the chords used is anything but stale with the style of lyrics used. They have various sections creating evident sections throughout the song, chorus, verse ect. As I said, it is oh-so-easy for a two piece band to have to compensate for the lack of instruments and individuals to create further fills and riffs alongside the main guitar and drums. But as a rarity it is for any two piece to do well, I can safely say I wouldnt want Crushed Out to change. Short review, I know and I am sorry. Hopefully this brief encounter will make you want to engage further with the upcoming release Want To Give, set to be released 6th November 2012. I have high hopes for this album, I hope you do too.
