Elton John: 10 Best Classic Rock Songs
6. Amoreena
Elton John may have been born and raised and raised in Pinner, Middlesex but much of his music, and 1970’s Tumbleweed Connection album in particular, sounds like It comes direct from America’s Deep South.
That unapologetic love for all things Americana is all over the yearning Amoreena, from Elton’s captivating piano licks to the Southern-fried snarl in his vocal.
Like much of its country rock flavoured parent album, you could file Amoreena alongside tracks by Lynard Skynard or The Band and it wouldn’t feel out of place. The recording of this track marked the first appearance on record of John’s classic early Seventies rhythm section Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, with this song in particular idistinguished by the tight snap of Olsson’s drums.
The song was immortalised through its use in the opening credits of Dog Day Afternoon.
