Every Arctic Monkeys Single Ranked Worst To Best
5. Crying Lightning
Pwoar, what can we say about a song this fantastic? It swirls, spooks, slides and haunts. It’s ominous and massive, its chorus soars, and as the first single from the band's third album Humbug, it proved that the Arctic Monkeys were once again ready to step up and try something new.
The idea of sweets has always been key to the motifs of Arctic Monkeys but rarely more than on Crying Lightning. Turner sings about a girl as sweet as the pick and mix she eats, fun and not as invested in the narrator as he’d like. She aggravates him, but he can’t resist coming back for more.
Yet the girl cries lightning when things go wrong. It’s her childish, twisted game - once sweet, now deranged.
Candy-coated, yet hazier than ever, Crying Lightning showed the band could turn their hands to writing darker guitar rock. The music video shows the band floating the sea on a boat, suffering fog, sea, storms and figures of themselves. Everything stepped up a level on Humbug as the band transformed from aggrivated kids to a world dominating rock band.
