Every Billy Joel Album Ranked Worst To Best

5. Turnstiles

Despite only being his fourth album, 1976's Turnstiles is one of Joel's very best records, and sees an artist completely at ease with testing the waters, pushing the boundaries of what he can do in the studio and attempting to craft something that few on the scene were willing to try at the time. It came out just before he really blew up, and promises ever bigger things.

Turnstiles is full to bursting with every genre Joel ever tackled, from the almost bluesy "New York State of Mind," the exciting "All You Wanna Do Is Dance" and the thoughtful anthems "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" and "Angry Young Man."

Every track offers something fresh and new, and you can tell just from hearing it that Joel is ready to hit audiences with something big - find his sound, settle into his comfort zone and really let loose. Turnstiles may not be as refined as what was still to come, but when there's this much variety to enjoy on one album, that's really not a problem.

Best Songs: New York State of Mind, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, Angry Young Man
