Every Nirvana Project Ranked From Worst To Best

1. In Utero

So...how do you list something higher than Nevermind? I mean, the album is one of the most awe-inspiring feats in grunge and single-handedly reshaped the way that most rock fans approached the genre going forward. While Nevermind may have been the call to arms for the new regime of rock and roll, In Utero is where you got to really see inside the mind of Kurt Cobain.

Though he chased the spotlight whenever he could, Nirvana's 3rd outing shows Kurt Cobain at war with his own celebrity across every track. Hooking up with famed indie producer Steve Albini, the resulting songs are a lot more abrasive than the stuff on Nevermind, leading to straight up noise tracks like Tourette's and Milk It. On the other hand, this is one of those rare instances where the sonic ugliness actually plays to the album's favor.

From one track to the next, you can hear Cobain lashing out at everything around him, be it the paparazzi, the music business, his friends, or even himself. For every experiment like Very Ape, you also get some of the most beautiful tracks that this band has ever made like on Dumb and All Apologies. However, this cry for help didn't register with the public in time when Cobain was found dead in his home in between two legs of the tour. Nevermind may have been the defining musical statement, but when it comes to the purest artistic expression, In Utero is Kurt Cobain, warts-and-all.

Best Tracks: Dumb, Scentless Apprentice, Heart Shaped Box
