Every Oasis Album - Ranked From Worst To Best
4. The Masterplan
Whatever anyone might say about Oasis' later albums, it's clear that Noel Gallagher was not suffering for want of tunes during the band's 90s heyday, as this B-sides collection expertly proves.
In fact, the only bad thing about listening to The Masterplan (besides from having to sit through the needlessly long instrumental 'The Swamp Song' or an underwhelming live cover of The Beatles' 'I Am The Walrus') is having to wonder what might have been had the band kept these cuts for a studio record, rather than succumbing to the excesses of Be Here Now or following the underwhelming path of its follow-up Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.
'Acquiesce', 'Talk Tonight', 'Half the World Away' and 'Stay Young' can easily sit alongside Oasis' better-known classics, 'Stay Young' in particular feeling as though it deserved a place on a studio record. Meanwhile, the cinematic title track stands tall above anything else that either Gallagher brother penned while in Oasis or during their respective solo careers, coming closer to a genuine artist statement than any other Oasis song.
But for all its tunes, the most remarkable thing about this collection is how well the songs sit alongside each other. For a record combined of outtakes recorded over several years, The Masterplan proves a pretty cohesive listen, and were it not for a live cover chucked into the mix, it would almost feel like a studio album.
