Every Pearl Jam Album Opening Song Ranked From Worst To Best

8. Breakerfall - Binaural

The word binaural means "having or relating to two ears" and is used to describe how most human beings process sound. You'll be glad you've got two ears to wrap around this album, especially its opening track.

Setting in motion the band's 2000 sixth album, Breakerfall owes a large debt to the classic rock bands the group grew up admiring, as it leans into the techniques used by The Who on songs such as Won't Get Fooled Again and I Can See For Miles.

This isn't a bad thing though, as if you're going to steal, you should steal from the best.

There's a lot to like about how dirty and seedy this thing sounds, with Vedder's muffled voice really low in the mix, but unfortunately Breakerfall's too short to really make an impact. At only two minutes and 19 seconds long, it feels like it's gone before it can really get started, which is such a shame, as a more fleshed-out version might have performed better.
