Gojira: Ranking All 6 Studio Albums

3. From Mars To Sirius (2005)

From Mars to Sirius stands the test of time as a symbolic sci-fi epic; the audial equivalent of movies like Solaris, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Andromeda Strain.

With a narrative that follows a species’ attempts to rebuild a dying planet, Gojira’s third album is one that witnessed them adopt many of the hallmarks that they are notorious for today: environmental advocacy, lyrics that illustrate immense, natural landscapes, giant and multi-layered songs, and, beneath it all, an undertone of heavy, subtle sorrow.

By uniting the pure brutality of the neck-snapping Terra Incognita with the avant-garde spirit of The Link, the four-piece would create their first of many undeniable masterpieces; an album that offers various pleasures for repeat listeners.

Upon first playing it, the initial response to From Mars to Sirius is to be shaken by its sheer power, felt best in the savage breakdown of “Backbone” and the percussive weight of “The Heaviest Matter of the Universe”. But, eventually, the record opens up, letting you notice the luscious lyrics of “In the Wilderness”, the foreboding melody of “From Mars” and the sensitivity of “Global Warming”.

For its ability to keep luring fans back again and again, From Mars to Sirius belongs in the upper echelon of Gojira’s brilliant discography.
