Despite their fairly consistent level of success, Green Day are a band that divide opinion and have done so for most of their career.
After making a name for themselves in the Californian punk scene in the early 1990s, Green Day were accused of abandoning the people that made them when they signed with a major record label. However, the release of ‘Dookie’ in 1994 saw the band burst into the mainstream and justify their decision.
But even from there, the trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have had a rollercoaster of a career. The albums that followed 'Dookie' were far from flops, but people began to view Green Day as a band that were not going to be able to improve upon the success of their major label debut album.
Some thirty-plus years after forming the band, Billie, Mike and Tre are showing no signs of slowing down and released their thirteenth studio album, ‘Father Of All…’, in 2020 and are continuing to add to their catalogue of pop-punk anthems.
But how many classic Green Day songs can you recognise from just one random lyric?
