Green Day: Ranking Their Albums From Worst To Best
6. ¡Dos!
If you enjoyed Green Day's ultra-brief, "secret" side project, Foxboro Hot Tubs, then this is the album for you. It's old-school, 50s-inspired party rock. It's dirty in a way Green Day's never been before, and regardless of your opinion on it, ¡Dos! sounds like the most fun these guys have had recording in a very long time. And that counts for a lot when you consider this was a band that, just a few years earlier, had written a song that one critic described as "a sensitive arena rock cut" that reminded them of Toto's "Africa." So...yeah, a song like "Makeout Party" is a pretty delightful diversion from all that. For much of its wonderfully concise runtime, ¡Dos! achieves the unthinkable, recalling both vintage Green Day and incorporating a new kind of rousing, foot-stomping guitar work. It's not all gritty riffs and sexy swagger, though. There's also a generous helping of peppy, doo -wop inspired jams that would make Buddy Holly or The Darts proud. (There's also the clumsy foray into a slinky, hip hop sound on "Nightlife," but we can just sweep that one under the rug.) Basically, this is the album that finally, triumphantly unveils Green Day's usually covert garage rock tendencies and allows them to soar majestically. This is a party music medley that doesn't let up until the last notes. Which might makes this the most sonically adventurous Green Day album in their discography. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ptjr9z2QUY
