Iceage & Fascism: 5 Reasons To Hate & 3 Reasons Why It's Still (Maybe) Okay To Listen

4. The US Also Has A Problem With Racism, And No One Is Talking About It

Lest I be accused of Anti-European sentiments, let's get one thing straight: America has a serious problem with racism. It took Mississippi 148 years to ratify the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery. The place with the most hate-crimes per capita is our captial city. I live adjacent to states with serious white power problems and just north of where I live now in Montana there is a movement to turn a community into a 'white race colony;' and don't get me started on the immigration debate. The problem with the United States is that the conversation stalled out. One of our supreme court justices recently said that he didn't think discrimination is a problem anymore. This seems to be the prevalent view in America amongst those who had never experienced discrimination. A great example is of this story of Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records, who was found to have a Skrewdriver clipping on the wall of his apartment. He didn't even know they were a skinhead band. That lack of awareness is troubling when you consider the symbols that Iceage plays with versus the lack of awareness that seems prevalent in our culture. It's even worse looking at the active denial of their behavior by the North American music press, especially considering the criticism leveled at larger, national acts.

I am a writer and musician born and raised in Montana. I have done everything from fixing fences in Glacier National Park to curating the music library at KBGA Missoula. I am also a lazy jerk.
