John Mayer: Ranking His Albums From Worst To Best

3. Room For Squares (2001)

Room For SquaresBest Track: Your Body Is a Wonderland Worst Track: Great Indoors The album that started it all, Room for Squares still remains one of Mayer€™s most triumphant moments in music and the best possible start to a now long spanning music career. The early days of Mayer gave the album a sound of pop, rock and by listening to the album it seemed that he was trying to write catchy songs that would get played on the radio, unlike nowadays where he wouldn€™t really care. Room for Squares however still is Mayer€™s bestselling album and gave us with some very memorable hits. The great songs that come to mind when I think of Room For Squares include €œWhy Georgia€, €œNeon€, €œ3x5€, €œNo Such Thing€, €œYour Body Is Wonderland€ and €œ83€ to just name a few. Room for Squares showed us the sweet innocence to a young Mayer who was just trying to make it on the big stage and it is expressed through his song writing. These songs had more of a cheery, positive sound even when the songs describe problems. The pace in which some of the songs, mainly the first half of the album, are played gives a good vibration and a happy feeling when listening to it. The second half of the album did slow down the pace and the way that the arrangement was placed did fit the nature in what the lyrics were about. But still keeps up with that pop vibe that we get throughout the whole album. The album as a whole came with a great track listing and some very successful singles and fan favourites. €œNo Such Thing€ was the single that kick-started the aims of commercial success for Rooms for Squares and the results were good. A fast-moving melody, with good vocals and well written lyrics saw it climb up the US charts and people were really starting to take notice of what John Mayer could do. €œWhy Georgia€ followed and as well as good commercial standings it proved to be a real fan favourite and one of Mayer€™s best pieces of work. Mayer€™s most successful song though not just on Room for Squares but possibly during he€™s entire career was €œYour Body Is a Wonderland€. A simple song about his love for a woman, €œYour Body Is a Wonderland€ among other awards saw Mayer get his first Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and was the best addition to a really fantastic album. Despite near the end of the album, the last few songs were not classics with the majority of the real hits coming through at the start. Room for Squares gave us what we never saw in future Mayer albums to come and that was a positive sound. Songs that were just really easy to listen to, made you feel happy and the sun was never going to stop shining making it a really great album to listen to. Even after being around for 14 years, Room for Squares still stands as one of the best Mayer albums and gave us some of his best songs.
