9. Blue Jeans
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRWox-i6aAk A story of pure lust - the moment you see someone and fall immediately in love/lust - in this case an eternal love that is doomed from the start. This is what makes Lana so fantastic, it sounds like a film script, innocent girl meets bad boy who will lead her to her doom, but it's actually articulating a universal feeling. The opening line 'Blue jeans, white shirt / Walked into the room you know you made my eyes burn" sums up the butterflies in the stomach moment of instant (and in this case, fatal) attraction. Opening with a lovely Country & Western guitar twang, Lana is in submissive mode here, the gangster's moll sat at home waiting for her bad boy to come back. As with some of her other songs this has led to accusations that she's an 'anti-feminist', but that's nonsense. Lana writes about love, there's no winner or dominating partner, it varies dependent on the situation. It's a 21st Century version of 'Stand by your man' by Tammy Wynette, albeit probably written on MDMA. And I can't see Tammy writing such a kick-ass line as 'Love you more, than those bitches before, say you'll remember, say you'll remember, please, I will love you until the end of time'. That ain't anti-feminism, that's love.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
