Led Zeppelin: 10 Best Songs

2. Whole Lotta Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TM2QxqnJLQ What can I say about this classic fragment of rock and roll gold? Probably the most recognisable guitar riff in the world of music since its release in 1969, regularly frequents lists of the greatest rock songs of all time, and the very last song ever played by Led Zeppelin as a foursome. I wish I could think of some clever way to describe the amount of love that people (Led Zep fans or not) have for this song - but nothing comes to mind, so you'll just have to trust me when I say the general consensus is that people look upon Whole Lotta Love somewhat favourably. I'm told that rock bands in the 60's and 70's were known to dabble in the odd recreational methamphetamine, and I'm also told that prolonged use of such substances can create the effect of mis-remembering certain events - which explains why non of the band can come up with a coherent story of how the song was established without totally contradicting one another. John Paul Jones seems to think the riff evolved from an onstage improvisation during a performance of Dazed And Confused, an anecdote described by Jimmy Page as "Absolutely incorrect", since he had written and rehearsed it intentionally before they had started the recording sessions for Led Zeppelin II. Robert Plant on the other hand, vehemently denies the song even exists at all, and doesn't remember writing or recording it (I'm joking ... That was a joke). One thing we do know is that Whole Lotta Love is another of Zeppelin's songs that is not 100% original, with some lyrics taken from the Muddy Waters' 1962 track You Need Love (written by Willie Dixon) and Plant's vocal style being remarkably similar to Steve Marriott's version when Small Faces covered the same song. But be that as it may, Whole Lotta Love is an outstanding song in its own right, and probably could have been at number 1 had it been a little luckier ...
