Led Zeppelin: 10 Best Songs

8. Going To California

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IZ-jATBq9A A number to accentuate Zeppelin's outstanding diversity now, and it comes in the form of this acoustic, folk-style masterpiece from 1971. On an album that seemed to have a lot of influence in the 19th century music revival, Going To California's dream-like vocal energy and gorgeous refrain (owing a lot to Page's Double Drop D tuning) just gives it the edge to gain a place on this list over The Battle Of Evermore. Now, I know folk music isn't everyone's cup of tea, but its popularity is spreading (think Mumford And Sons - described by Robert Plant as one of the most exciting bands around) and if you're gonna listen to it, can you think of anyone that can do it better than the pioneers of heavy metal? I know I can't. I for one love the sound of a mandolin - and even though it's probably more prominent in Evermore, the way in which Jones uses it to slide into and caress Page's guitar piece (sexual innuendo half-intended) is utterly enchanting. According to Wikipedia, which I'm told is 100% accurate on every page, the song is written about Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, with whom Plant and Page were infatuated. I'm not entirely sure what happens when two Gods of rock become obsessed with a mere mortal, presumably a section of the Earth somewhere collapses in on itself to form a pathway to the underworld - but it certainly means that Going To California belongs on a list of this calibre at number 8.
