Led Zeppelin: 10 Best Songs

6. When The Levee Breaks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgiPcTYtpFk Here's another song that the mighty Zeppelin plucked from obscurity and fashioned into a piece of musical brilliance. Initially recorded by husband and wife duo Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie (shockingly not their real birth names) in 1929, Led Zep released it on Led Zeppelin IV 42 years later (1971 for those of you that don't have a calculator handy). The song is probably best known for Bonzo's fearsome drumming, which was being played at the bottom of a stairwell in Headley Grange (a rehearsal venue in the 60's and 70's). Along with this improvised recording method, WTLB was heavily altered in the mixing process, with Plant's harmonica given backward echo, and the entire song being slowed down to give it an effect which I can only describe as being 'gloopy' (in a good way). Because of these alterations in the studio, Levee Breaks was difficult to reproduce live, and was subsequently dropped after being used briefly in the 1975 US Tour. Despite the fact that I have formed this list, and When The Levee Breaks is my favourite Led Zeppelin song, I feel compelled to put it no higher then number 6. Perhaps because of the fact that it's not entirely a creation from the band themselves, or that a general consensus would state there are precisely 5 songs better than it - but it's still one you could listen to on a loop for the rest of time and not get bored once.
