Led Zeppelin: 10 Best Songs

4. Rock And Roll

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WzG64syKHA From one of Zeppelin's least known songs to one of their most known, and there's probably a good reason why Rock And Roll is one of the biggest commercial hits in the bands 85-track catalogue. Based on the twelve-bar blues progression (one of the most popular progressions in the rock and roll genre) the song was born out of a jamming session during the lad's futile attempts to finish Four Sticks. With a guest appearance by The Rolling Stones pianist Ian Stewart (who also contributed to the Physical Graffiti track Boogie With Stu, hence the name) Rock and Roll was released on the album Led Zeppelin IV in late 1971, although it had been played live at concerts since the beginning of the year - with Plant referring to it as It's Been A Long Time (the opening line of the song). Ever the inventor Jimmy Page decided to ignore the normal amp and microphone set-up and instead plug his guitar directly into the mixing console. This guy don't play by no-one's rules but his own. Rock And Roll is one of only a few Zeppelin tracks to merit all four band members with a composer credit, and it happens to be one of their best tracks of all time ... Coincidence? Probably, but if that's what happens when you stick all of their heads together at once, there's no way I couldn't include it on the list at a very respectable number 4.
