Metallica: 10 Best Hard Rock Songs

5. I Disappear

Ahhh yes...the song that launched a thousand Napster lawsuits. During the late 90's, the band were asked to contribute a song to Mission Impossible II, but things started to spiral when demos of the song were found being pirated on Napster. This eventually led to Lars Ulrich starting a legal dispute with the company, which turned him into one of the most hated men in the music industry almost overnight.

It's really a shame that "I Disappear" was dragged through the mud, because the basis of the track still holds up as a highlight of Metallica's darker period.

Even though fans weren't really feeling the more alternative side of the band's sound, this felt like the perfect amalgamation of all the band's experimental tracks but done with a more Metallic ethos. While the riff may be nothing spectacular, the little wah stab from Kirk ingrains itself in your brain and refuses to go away.

The chorus melody is also incredibly well-written, with Hetfield settling into a more subtle vocal tone before returning to his trademark growling style. There are probably a lot of Metallica fans who just saw this song as another nail in the band's coffin, but this type of hard rock fun is still a blast to listen even with all of the Napster hooplah.
